The Registration of Persons Act 2015 created the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
On the 15th of July 2024,the Registration of Persons (Amendment) Act 2024 was assented into law with the effect of transferring the marriage function from Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) to the National Identification and Registration Authority.
It is on this background, that NIRA organized a marriage dialogue with key stakeholders like, Religious leaders and Cultural institutions, Town Clerks etc at PPDA-URF *today* .
Key to note, there are 5 types of marriages in Uganda that include ; Church, Civil, Customary, Islamic and Hindu.
The Town Clerks and Sub County Chiefs have the legal mandate to *only register customary marriages* which have been celebrated by the couple👫at a fee of *60,000* /= within *6 months*
